A viking purgatory, Odin tasks you with slaying the ancient enemies of the gods that lurk here before you are granted access to Valhalla. Valheim is a one to 10 player open-world survival game by Iron Gate Studio, published by Coffee Stain Publishing. Reminiscent of popular titles like Terraria, Dark Souls, Runescape and Minecraft, Valheim’s gameplay takes aspects of each of these games and binds them together for an exciting co-op experience. With over 5 million copies sold since its Feb. 2 release, it’s no secret that this game is a massive success. From frozen mountain ranges to beautiful, lush meadows, you’ll adventure through Valheim solo or with friends as you collect resources, hunt for food, build a base and survive. In the procedurally-generated world of Valheim, you can raise the viking longhouse of your dreams and establish great settlements and outposts to make your footprint on the land. There are a vast number of resources available to build your base and improve upon your gear. As you progress through each successive boss, you’ll unlock new resources to harvest and new biomes will be available for you to traverse, thus unlocking better tools and equipment to craft. You may start out with leather armor at first, but pretty soon you can make your way to sporting some hefty bronze armor and weapons. Bronze armor can be unlocked from mining after defeating the first boss, but Valheim’s biggest issue lies within its grindy resource-collecting system. Mining takes an awfully long time and transporting the heavy tin and copper ores to and from your home base can be an excruciating hassle unless you have carts built or tier 2 boats crafted. Even in the earliest stages of the game, my friends and I struggled to get basic resources because we had to hunt boars by hand in order to get the leather scraps needed to craft a single bow. Once a single bow was created for the group, one person was then in charge of hunting more boars and deer for basic resources like meat for food and leather for armor. Still, Valheim’s gameplay remains fun, despite the hours of grinding needed to upgrade to the next tier of equipment. The combat is reminiscent of Dark Souls; kiting, dodge rolling and parrying are necessary

With the rising popularity of the new God of War PS4/PS5 saga and Valheim, Viking and Nordic-themed games are now back on gamers’ radar. However, most of them only provide a closed, single-player experience. They are fun but it could get lonely playing alone sometimes. Therefore, if you are looking for more Viking-themed multiplayer games like Valheim and Tribes of Midgard to play with your Discord group, you’re in luck. Read on and prepare yourself for digital fights worthy of Valhalla!1. Valheim – PCIt’s a no-brainer to put Valheim into this list considering the game instantly garner 4 million sales in less than a month — while still in Early Access, to boot. You could say that this particular game is what kickstarted another wave of both multiplayer survival and Viking trends in the industry. Here as battle-slain warriors, you and up to nine friends are sent to Valheim to bring order into the chaotic tenth Norse world within the world tree Yggdrasil. What made it stands out among other survival titles is thanks to layers of goals you need to do before you’re able to summon and defeat mythical boss enemies. It’s extremely open in terms of mechanics too, giving you the ability to build small bases into a full-fledged village, boats, and level up character skills. There is a lot of stuff to do and discover instead of just chopping trees or mining ores just to continue playing for the billionth time. The game also supports player-hosted servers so you don’t need to worry if Valheim’s multiplayer community will ever die.2. Tribes of Midgard – PS4, PS5, PCLike Valheim, a total of 10 players can play this game together. However, unlike the previously mentioned game, there’s more emphasis on combat and surviving enemy onslaught than surviving in the wilds. As you’re tasked to protect the Yggdrasil tree, waves of relentless monsters from Hellthings to Jotunn giants will show up to harass you every night. There’s no permadeath too so in theory it makes setting up tactics to defend yourselves and Yggdrasil a bit easier, but of course everything is easier said than done in a lot of survival games. The console releases support match-making as well, in case you have trouble getting all nine of your co-op partners to get online at the same time.3. Northgard – PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, AndroidTalking about tactics, there are a handful of Viking-themed strategy games you could play together. First up is Northgard, an RTS where you take control of six different Viking clans in an attempt to conquer the titular new land. The main focus in this game is taking territory and managing resources, not just to win through conquest. Somewhat
